Beauty may be defined as possessing qualities that give great pleasure or satisfaction (Beautiful. Dictionary.com. Dictionary.com, n.d. Wed. 9 Apr. 2014). In today’s society, more emphasis is being placed more on the outer characteristics an individual may portray and competitions are formed to see who is the better looking. These pageants however do not embrace the naturally beautiful women seeing that the ones that usually win are the ones that went through countless plastic surgeries or even inhumane dietary practices just to get in the state they are. But what these competitions are actually doing is damaging the self esteem and respect of normal women and giving them the assumption that they have to wear make-up or perform alternations their bodies in order to be attractive. Even though some may enjoy watching such contests there are a variety of negative long term effects these competitions tend to have on the younger women in society that look up to some of these contes tants as role-models.
